I have completed reading the article "Phonemes in Use: Multiple Activities for a Critical Process" by Patrick C. Manyak.   The article contained several activities that help young children reinforce basic instruction in phonemic awareness.  The second activity, Say It, and Move it is an integral part of the Road to the Code program.  I have used Road several times in the last four years and found it a VERY effective method to provide practice for struggling students.
Another activity, Scaffolded Spelling, is similar to Sailboat spelling we do with first graders.  The children say 3 or 4 letter words slowly several times, listening for each sound in succession.  When they hear each sound they write the letter.  I have seen the activity used as a literacy center but I think it is more effective when done with the teacher.  That way the teacher can monitor the children and correct mistakes early.
The article provided activities that will prove a valuable resource this year with the first grade children with whom I will be working.
